Is there any guidance on prescribing erectile dysfunction vacuum pumps?
- There is a list of Vacuum Pumps for Erectile Dysfunction that in the Drug Tariff that can be prescribed on the NHS only if the patient meets one of the areas below and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The prescriber will need to endorse the face of the prescription form with the reference "SLS".
- For all acute Trust requests for prescribing of a vacuum pump, the patient must have received the appropriate training and education on how to use the specific appliance by their hospital specialist before a GP can prescribe the product.
- The Trust should provide you with a letter for inclusion in the patient’s medical records which must state that the patient meets the NHS criteria for treatment of erectile dysfunction, has received the required training and should contain the GP request to commence prescribing.
Criteria for prescribing vacuum pumps (Drug Tariff)
(a) a man who is suffering from any of the following - Treatment of erectile dysfunction.
- diabetes
- multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson's disease
- poliomyelitis
- prostate cancer
- severe pelvic injury
- single gene neurological disease
- spina bifida
- spinal cord injury; or
(b) a man who is receiving treatment for renal failure by dialysis; or
(c) a man who has had the following surgery -
- prostatectomy
- radical pelvic surgery
- renal failure treated by transplant.
