You may be aware that BHR CCGs have been implementing a ‘Sick Day Rules’ project since 2016 that aims to reduce the number of patients attending A&E or having an emergency hospital admission due to acute kidney injury (AKI) – many of these admissions are entirely preventable.
As part of the initiative we have been asking GPs to inform their patients about the risk of developing AKI from the below commonly prescribed medications, and to advise them to take a medicines break if they experience diarrhoea, vomiting or a fever.
How you can help
When prescribing any of the affected medicines, please remind patients of the following message:
If you have diarrhoea, vomiting or a fever when taking this medicine, stop taking it for a few days and start again when you feel better.
Pharmacists will be including this message on the labels of the affected medicines.
