Endoscopy services – helping to improve the patient experience
10 June 2021
BHRUT is working hard with partners across NEL to recover Endoscopy services as part of the covid recovery programme. You can help to improve patient experience by following these guidelines when making a 2ww GP referral:
Please Do:
- Check if your patient has had a recent endoscopy before referring;
- Ensure the patient has had a recent FBC, U & E’s and ferritin and include results with referral (u+e, FBC and ferritin need to be within last 3 months.)
- Ensure the patient’s anticoagulation status information is complete
- Document your patients co-morbidities (including cardiac devices)
- Ensure the patient is fully aware that they have been referred to be assessed for an invasive endoscopy procedure
- Ensure any identified UTI is resolved and repeat a PSA test prior to referral on a Urology 2ww pathway
- Ask advice if you are unsure (advice & guidance or Medefer)
Please remember to:
- Check the patient’s contact details are correct and up to date (including phone no.)
- Conduct FIT for lower GI referrals and include the result on referral
- Fully complete clinical details section on upper GI referrals
- Document if the patient is confused, has dementia, needs assistance communicating or mobilising etc.
By using C the Signs you are prompted to complete the mandatory fields and this results in a better quality/completeness of referral forms – this is the preferred route for cancer referrals and has the added benefit of safety netting patients on the C the Signs system.
