Dear GP colleagues,
Following discussions between GPs and hospital clinicians, the CCGs have agreed to fund additional prescription of Maxidex eye drops for cataract surgery patients who are advised to use more than the standard dosage of eye drops prescribed following surgery.
We’ve become aware that some patients run out of Maxidex eye drops before completing the full course. This can be because a patient has been advised to use eye drops more frequently than the standard dosage (four times a day for four weeks) or because they struggle to put drops in and use more than expected.
BHRUT will now provide cataract surgery patients with two bottles of Maxidex when they leave hospital – which should be sufficient for all patients to complete the required course.
If any of your patients do run out Maxidex eye drops following surgery, they will now be able to contact the Eye Clinic at Queen’s Hospital. Eye drops will then be dispensed from the hospital or through the Eye Clinic.
The Eye Clinic can be contacted on:
This will be much simpler for our patients and means they do not need to make appointments with their GPs for an additional prescription, and also saves time and resources for our practices and pharmacies if more Maxidex is required.
