One of our key quality, innovation, productivity and prevention (QIPP) areas is the prescribing of unlicensed medicines, often called 'specials'. These products often do not have safety, stability and efficacy data, and they are often very expensive. Because of these concerns, we are closely monitoring these, and we want to support GPs to look at how they prescribe them.
Our specials guide on the use of unlicensed medicines
We have put together guidance on the use of specials which has been ratified by the BHR Area Precribing Sub-Committees (APC). The guide which was originally updated as an entire document is gradually being superseded by a new introduction and individual monographs- please use this first where possible:
Medicines suitable for adults with swallowing difficulties (SPS)
Antiplatelet formulations suggested for adults with swallowing difficulties (SPS)
Oral anticoagulant formulations suggested for adults with swallowing difficulties (SPS)
Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) formulations suggested for adults with swallowing difficulties (SPS)
Statin formulations suggested for adults with swallowing difficulties (SPS)
Please note this guide is for use within the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. BHR CCGs accepts no liability for improper usage. The information contained in the specials guide is intended only to support appropriate healthcare professionals and key decision makers. It is not intended for patient use, patients are always advised to speak to their GPs or pharmacists for advice on medicines.
