If you are not an independent prescriber (IP), you can enrol on the CPPE pathway (below) but you will need to complete the IP training in order to conduct SMRs autonomously. Until you are qualified as an IP, doing SMRs needs to be a process whereby another clinician will need to action the recommendation changes after you have conducted a medication review. The scope for doing SMRs will be limited according to the individual clinical experience and will need to be done under supervision of a clinician.
Medication Safety- Indicators Specification: A set of prescribing indicators have been developed as part of a programme of work to reduce medication error and promote safer use of medicines, including prescribing, dispensing, administration and monitoring. The programme of work is in response to the World Health Organisation (WHO) global challenge – Medication without Harm.
